How many societies are there?
UHSU currently has about 50 societies. For a full list of societies, please visit the student Union website. However, there are currently a few societies pending so keep checking just in case one takes your fancy.
Why can’t I see a society on the list?
There maybe several reasons for this. Try looking again - societies aren't always called what you may think it is.
Another possibility is that maybe the society doesn't exist. In which case...start one up!
How do I register to join a UHSU society?
Register on-line to join club and societies: activities.uhsu.co.uk and pay your registration fee.
Take your Student ID card, along with a recent passport sized photograph (and your joining fee payment if not paid on-line) to the UHSU General Office, College Lane.
Your membership card will be made up immediately.
Why do I have to pay a registration fee?
So your society can have some money to spend on you, for your trips and activities! £ 8.70 p is solely spent on you and covers your insurance too. It also allows you to book rooms in the University, the Astroturf on College Lane for free and to use the UHSU minibus at a discounted rate. The £1.30 p is spent on VAT.
How are societies funded?
Societies are mainly funded through their membership fees. The majority of the initial £ 10.00 joining fee is given to the society’s committee to control.
They are also given a ‘grant’/ budget from the Student Union. The budget is awarded on a loose set of criteria: the committee administration packs, how many activities the societies do and how well they did the year before.
Another source of income is what society events whereby they charge an entry fee for something that they have organised.
Also, if groups participate in International Cultural Week there is a small budget that is allocated to societies if a suitable event/display/stall is made.
There is additionally an option where you can apply for more funding for specific reasons and any application made will be considered but can not be guaranteed.
More information about society finance
When and where do societies meet?
Every society is different - you should contact the society for this information. Many societies meet in the Union building in the evenings, and also regularly hold socials elsewhere.
How do I edit my society’s page on this website?
If any information that needs to be updated, please contact Chandni Patel (c.v.patel@herts.ac.uk)
How can I get in touch with societies?
You can get society contact details either from the societies micro-sites or under the Societies section on the Student Union page. If their details aren't there then you can email c.v.patel@herts.ac.uk or uhsu.activities@herts.ac.uk
Also at the start of each year you can meet the societies in person at Freshers Fair in October – where every society and club has a stall and are available to answer any of your questions. Additionally, there is a smaller Freshers Fair at the end of January.
How do I set up a new society?
Firstly, have a look at the full list of societies to make sure that your proposed activity or interest group is not covered by one of the existing societies. The Societies Exec will not approve the formation of a new society with similar aims to an existing one. You would also be best talking to any similar societies to see if they can accommodate your activity.
If you still think you would like to form a new society, check out the links in the resource library on how to create a new society.
How do I book a room for my society?
Societies now have to fill in a Risk Assessment Form, which can be found on the on-line resource library. Once this has been filled in, it needs to be sent to Chandni Patel who is based in the Volunteer Centre to be signed off. Once this is done you can go to the Student Union reception /general office where they would deal with your room requests and queries.
