Thank you to everyone who voted in the 2010 UHSU Elections! View the list of your newly elected representatives!
These five full time officers were elected by UH students during the last academic year and began their year of office in July 2010. The positions are; VP Communications & Media, VP Academic Support & Campaigns, VP Union Development, and VP Student Activities.
Each has a particular job role to fulfil, as well as their group responsibilities of reporting to council, attending meetings and conferences on behalf of UH students and as trustees of UHSU.
These are the people who represent you, the students at UH; they want to hear from you, so that they can give voice to your concerns, needs and wants. They also want to share in your successes and the good times, celebrating and having fun as only students can.

Adam Flint - Vice President, Union Development
Main focus
I want to help review SU services, commercial or student based and to re-evaluate them for next year. My main focus is to make everything better for students. It's the unknown at the moment, but we have a strong team.
My skills
I will be learning with everyone else. I have the passion and good communication to do this job. I think most importantly I have the ability, and am willing, to put anything aside for the greater good.
What is Union Development about?
Union Development's role is in overseeing commercial services combining with students' needs.
My aim this year
Students come first. I have worked here for four years and now have the platform to progress. I have the chance to give something back.

Laura Yeoman - Vice President, Student Activities
Main focus
To improve student awareness of all clubs and societies through more fund-raising social events. To help societies recruit through better communication tools such as SU organised websites and email addresses. To create a fairer AU for all clubs and provide better resources for the societies where necessary in order to achieve growth.
My skills
I'm very excitable and love to get new ideas rolling! I'm hoping to bring a lot of ideas to help the other positions but I know I'll need support from the other four Sabbs! I love working in groups and feel I bounce off others' ideas. I'm good in a team and often am keen to get things done in a timely and organised way.
What is Student Activities about?
My role will mainly focus on the queries all sport club and societies members have. I am hoping that more students outside of their pre-set groups will come to me hoping to get involved with activities and build on the amazing success of last year's RAG team.
My aim this year
To increase student understanding of all that the clubs and societies do for the University. I am further hoping to increase the student commitment and membership. I am hoping that all the students involved in the clubs and societies will be able to show the rest of the Uni what they do! The Uni should be very proud of the successes we have each year and should want to showcase these.

Thom Palser - Vice President, Comms and Media
This year with the UHSU Media Members I would really like to look at the quality of our output and how we can better equip our members for life after their degree. Training from external organisations as well as in house workshops towards winning student media awards are high on my priority list as they will act as a very good starting point in the media world. I also want to focus a lot of my time on to how we promote our Students’ Union services to the wider range of students we have here at UH. This will include increasing Sabbatical Officer Awareness and making sure that students are able to find us whenever they may need help. Coming from student media myself, I’m big on social networking so please do follow the Sabbatical Officers on Twitter and also read our Blogs via this website. Can’t wait to work with you all.

James Bowers - Student Trustee
Main focus:
Anyone who read my election Manifesto may remember me mentioning that I intend to make sure that every Strategic decision made in Trustee Meetings reflects the views of students from all backgrounds. This year, I intend to spend (poet but didn’t know it!) the majority of my time visiting clubs and societies across the board, to gain a broader understanding of what they require of the union and how we can make decisions which will ultimately benefit them.
Anyone who’s seen my shenanigans around the Union may remember me being out an awful lot in the Forum, getting involved with Raise and Give (RaG), Wearing fluorescent green wigs around campus and jumping out of the SU Lift, singing “and vote for me, for Student Trustee!”, as well as generally just being there!! I intend to keep this up (final year of course permitting!!) because I think that in order to be an effective trustee, I need to understand what YOU want - and that means going out into the field and getting stuck in!!
My skills:
My main skills which I know will help me get my job done, are my Passion and Determination to fulfill the role, my Team Working skills, as well as my ability to bring new and previously un-thought-of ideas to the table, in order to come up with simple workarounds to daunting problems. I also like helping people on a much more intimate scale, for example I am a Maths Tutor and a TRAKS Trainer. Another skill i’m particularly proud of is being able to dance like Mick Jagger!
What does a Student Trustee do?
Can you imagine the chaos we’d have if the Sabbs actually ran the whole of UHSU? I mean I love ‘em and everything, but we get new ones at least every two years! So to give the Union the stability it needs to be an effective support organisation, we appoint a CEO to ensure the union ticks over nicely, and to keep the permanent staff in check. Now because the CEO isn’t a student, he may not see things as we do; and that’s what the Trustees are there for - we ensure that the union progresses in a direction that is representative and beneficial for the students, NOT JUST the business. I’m always up for a chat and love to hear your thoughts and suggestions, so feel free to email me using the email address below, or by all means, track me down on Facebook!!
My aim this year:
1) Ensure that the decisions made at the Trustee Board meetings reflects the interests of the students in UHSU.
2) Encourage people to get involved in what is an amazing organisation!! Whether that be joining a club or society, or creating a new one altogether.

Varinder Singh Bola (Vaz) - Student Trustee
Varinder Singh Bola (Vaz) - Student Trustee
Main focus:
In my manifesto I spoke of staying true to Student wishes and directing the Union in the best interest of Students. I am still 100% committed to achieving this.
In the months following my election I have noticed the need for better student representation. As a result I am now working towards achieving better student representation within our Union and University.
This year I attended the NUS (National Union of Students) Black Students' Campaign training conference. I’ve come back with a lot of ideas which I’d like to implement.
My skills:
My main skills are probably mentoring and guidance. I often find myself giving advice on all sorts of topics. I've been a prefect and High School, a Student Representative at University, a Governor mentor at University & I've done an AQA accredited course in peer mentoring.
I've also done our Unions in-house TRAKS training course in Lobbying, Leadership, Presentation and Communication.
What does a Student Trustee do?
Our Union has three Student Trustees. We along with the 5 Sabbatical officers and three Independent Trustees’ sit on the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees provides strategic guidance and support to the Union.
You can think of us as being Governors of an organisation.
My aim this year:
1) Achieve better Student representation in our University and Union.
2) Promote involvement & active participation in the Students' Union.
